This was the blog that I sometimes published starting in March 2001 using a new service called Blogger. I'm now sometimes blogging using Tumblr at prepop.com - Onward.

Recipe: Sweet Potatoe Stir Fry with Veggie Burgers

I invented this. It was delicious.

The photo has nothing to do with it, but it was pretty and recently snowed here.

Ingredients:

Stir Fry
1 white sweet potato - peeled and cubed
1/2 Yellow onion - rough chop
8 oz. brown crimini mushrooms - halved & quartered
1 head baby bok choy chopped
1 head Red Chard
4 cloves garlic chopped well
2 tablespoons shredded ginger
4 tablespoons Canola oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce

Veggie Burgers:
Store bought or what I think was in the freezer that I made this summer
zucchini
potatoe to bind
red bell pepper
crook neck yellow squash

Directions:

Microwave the sweet potato for 3 minutes with a little water in the bowl
Save sweet potato to a bowl with the onion
Start Veggie Burgers (see below)
In a large bowl order the vegetables from bottom to top: chard, bok choy, mushrooms
Heat oil very hot
Throw in the sweet potato and onion and brown for 3 minutes
add the mushroom
add 1/2 the ginger and garlic
Add the bok choy and 1/2 cup water and stir fast
Add the soy sauce
add the mushrooms and the rest of the ginger and garlic
Stir fast until the chard is just right. Maybe a little more water to steam.
Serve in a deep bowl with the veggie burger on top.

Veggie Burgers:
Brown in skillet in olive oil. Slightly crunchy. I could see this with tempeh too.

I wish we knew the name of this talented songster who stopped by to see us at Burning Man. He rode by on his bike with a guitar on his back. We yelled out "Hey Guitar Man come over and play us a song." He did an hour long concert..

Update: 12/20/08 I feel a lot less gleeful in such a short time. Obama has chosen a homophobe to preach at what would have otherwise been a triumphant moment. We gave a quiet acceptance of Obama to get us out of the Bush quagmire but now the time to stand up to his passive aggressive kicks in the face is here.

In non-fire related news my old friend, mentor and dedicated Carlin fan David Allen interviewed me a couple of weeks ago. David is the author of the bestselling book Getting Things Done. His system has kept me on track and flourishing for over fifteen years. The interview is part of the "Connect" subscription on his site. If you're into GTD it's very worth checking out and they have a free trial.

In the interview we discuss interfaces, connecting, social networks, chirp, Google docs, Twitter, Apple and... world peace. It was just great to get all that out of my noodle and I want to thank him for the opportunity. I've posted the interview here.

Fire Near Our House - mariposa yosemite telegraph fire

**Final Update, Friday August 1st 8:00 a.m. - The fire is now 98% contained. Thanks firefighters!

There has been a wild fire raging near our home in Midpines, California. As of Sunday a.m. over 18,000 acres have been burned. Hundreds of homes were evacuated. At 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning we got a call from the fire department letting us know we should prepare to evacuate. So we gathered the animals and packed the car. We didn't get the follow up call to actually evacuate so we paced all night and finally got some sleep around 8 a.m.

Chirp Launches our Desktop App

This afternoon we're announcing the launch of our desktop app from Chirp. We took everything we learned from the full screen experience and made it into a tight little viewing screen that you can have running on your screen while you're doing other stuff.

It's like watching a fast slideshow, or watching your friends go by the from the seat of a subway car. I keep seeing it out the corner of my eye, like watching a channel of your friends on tv. Constantly updated with the newest, and some great archival surprises.

Then you can stop it and begin to get more engaged in the object that caught your eye. Share it via email or Facebook, see the meta information about it, who it's from, what others have said about it, comment on it yourself. Just a real nice way to grab all this stuff, stuff you care about but would never unearth. Then go back to the show without missing a beat. Make your own damn social network, if you will.

The download is Windows only (for today). I hope you'll give it a try and tell me what you think.

I was honored to be the MC for this debauchery known as BattleDecks at this year's South by Southwest Interactive Festival. Mule Design and Get Satisfaction should be commended for the creative and organizational hutzpa to make this happen. In this Rocketboom video Anil Dash from Six Apart returns from a second introduction and round of applause (the first time it wasn't enthusiastic enough). He nails the presentation and walks away with the trophy.

It's a great time here in Austin, with friendly, progressive people and lots and lots of good music.

Earlier in the year, after animated evenings at Moose's, I'd walk with my friends up Grant Street in North Beach and would point out a storefront that I thought would be a great place to hang out and do creative things with smart people. A bunch of situations and people converged and it happened. Well not in North Beach, but deep in the Mission - and the work is a different kind of work than I saw in the temporary picture. It's all better than the original image. All of it.

I've read that this experience can be described as: you won't know something when it arrives if you don't know what it looks like.

So, I am trying to create lots of pictures with the new, new reality and see what comes next.
